AGA2018 Hawaii Travel Information

The Big Island (Hawai`i) has two airports, one just north of Kailua-Kona on the west side of the island (KOA) and one in Hilo on the east side (ITO).  Prices can vary considerably depending on which airport you fly into.

The Kona airport (KOA) is closest to the Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) - about 35 miles, 45 minutes drive time.  Hilo airport (ITO) is about 60 miles and 80 minutes drive time.  Most people will come into KOA, which is served by several airlines.  Alaska Airlines, American, Delta, and United have nonstop flights from westcoast cities, many others will fly to Honolulu with connecting flights on Hawaiian or Mokulele Airlines.

Getting to the Hawaii Preparatory Academy

From KOA, one can take a taxi, rent a car, or arrange for shuttle service.  Uber and Lyft are not available from the airport.  Taxis cost about $120 one way, SpeediShuttle vans about $100.  Ride-sharing is therefore a good idea!  To coordinate a ride share with other attendees, use the AGA Twitter account @theAGA_org, hashtag #agarides, or use this poll https://doodle.com/poll/hr996s6wd46xbzbm

General info on ground transportation options is available at http://airports.hawaii.gov/koa/getting-to-from/ground-transportation/

All the major rental car companies operate from the airport.  If driving, turn left onto Highway 19, Queen Kaahumana Highway, when you leave the airport.  In about 26 miles, stay on Hwy 19 by turning right at the STOP onto Kawaihae Rd.  In about 8 miles make a sharp left turn onto Kohala Mountain Rd, Hwy 250.  HPA will come up quickly on the right.  Go to the second entrance, just past the large field.   Download the HPA campus map
